REVIEWS FOR THE WILD SONNETS: VOLUME VII (601-700)

Nicholas Korn has undertaken an ambitious project in his ‘Wild Sonnets’ poem sequence. It is also a surprisingly original project, given the long history of the sonnet form. Korn is highly skilled at metaphor-making, demonstrating what Aristotle once wrote of this ability in his “Poetics”—that it is the mark of genius, and the most important feature of good imaginative writing.

Korn’s work is a masterclass in poetical conceits and unfurling ideas through imagery. I highly recommend the ‘Wild Sonnets’ series by one of the leading lyric poets of our time.

I recently had the pleasure of exploring The Wild Sonnets: Volume VII, and I was struck by both the ambition and originality of the project. To create a new sonnet form and to sustain it across 700 poems is a remarkable literary achievement.

This work carries the lineage of Petrarch and Shakespeare while breaking fresh ground, offering readers an expansive meditation on what it means to be human. The way these sonnets balance structure and freedom, weaving alliteration, assonance, and metaphor with such precision, makes them both intellectually rich and emotionally resonant. The YouTube readings extend this resonance even further, creating a bridge between the page and the spoken word. Few projects today embody such a living tradition of poetry.
